William Fry [f.7.6]

We are grateful to Ros Petherick & Nick Savill for providing information on William & his descendants

William Fry was the sixth child of Robert Fry & Jane Burtenshaw christened April 2nd, 1848 at St. Mary’s parish church, Hartfield.

William was living at home at Harts Farm in 1851, 1861, & 1871.

He married Harriet Hudson on July 30th 1874 at Hartfield. Harriet was the daughter of William Hudson & Eliza Card, born 1851 at Chuck Hatch, Hartfield & christened September 28th, 1851 at St Mary's, Hartfield. William & Harriet were already related through the marriage of his sister Elizabeth Fry to John Hudson (1870), brother of William Hudson.

By 1881 William & Harriet were living at Frogs Hole Farm, Newbridge, Hartfield, next door to Harriet’s father, a carpenter, & brothers & sisters who were at Chuck Hatch Shop. William was a farm labourer at this time & they had 3 children – Emily Mary (5), Elizabeth Agnes (3) & William (2).

Tragically William died on July 8th, 1882 while farming at Hooks Farm, Hartfield. He had taken over Hooks Farm 7 months earlier where they kept cattle. Apparently he had financial worries about the farm & had been unwell complaining of head pain following a head cold 1 month prior to his death. William, having failed to return home, was found hanging in the stable by his wife Harriet & her brother Alfred Hudson at 4am. The verdict at the inquest was suicide.

William, aged 34, was buried July 12th, 1882 at St Marys, Hartfield near his parents.
